While cremation is becoming an increasingly popular choice for families in El Cerrito, Pinole, and El Sobrante, it’s important to remember this: Not all cremation providers are equal. Scandals in the media have caused many to be leery of cremation, and rightfully so. On top of that, the choice to cremate can involve personal, religious, or societal beliefs. In some cases, preferences are known before death, but in others, family members must make this decision. This is why our team at Sunset View Cemetery and Mortuary always recommends that people preplan their arrangements, so loved ones aren’t put in that position during a time of grief.

Whatever your wishes, you have to make sure you choose a cremation provider you can trust who will treat your loved one with dignity. You also have to be confident that the cremated remains returned to you are those of your loved one and not someone – or something – else.

Here are some questions you should ask any cremation provider before trusting yourself or your loved one into their care.

1.) Do you have a private, on-site crematory?

Many cremation providers outsource their cremations to third parties, sometimes even in another city or county. At Sunset View Cemetery and Mortuary, we didn’t want to do this. We wanted the ability to control every aspect of the entire process to make sure it’s up to our standards. That’s why we have our own private, on-site crematory. You can have peace of mind knowing your loved one is always in our care.

2.) Are your cremation providers experts in following various religious guidelines?

We embrace and respect cultural and religious diversity. Working with a family’s clergy or cultural leader, our knowledgeable and licensed professionals make sure religious guidelines are strictly followed.

3.) Am I allowed to view the crematory facility and equipment ahead of time?

We encourage personal inspection and are happy to give you a personalized tour of our facilities, if desired. We will also allow you to witness the beginning of your loved one’s cremation, if you would like. We offer this with confidence, because we know you will find our equipment is state-of-the-art, immaculately maintained, and environmentally safe.

Whatever your final wishes, our caring staff here at Sunset View Cemetery and Mortuary will be sure to help you arrange a personalized service while offering you the peace of mind you need at this difficult time. We invite you to reach out to us any time to learn more about our funeral or cremation services, to set up a tour of our facilities, or to begin the process of putting your arrangements in place
