Lt. William Lee Hawes died peacefully on May 20, 2015 in Berkeley, California at the age of 83.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife and high school sweetheart, Katherine Gray Hawes of Berkeley, his son Alan (Jennifer), daughter Nancy (Kent), Katherine’s children Carlos, Miguel, Gabriela, and Kyle, 14 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother Jack, his mother Esther and his father Kipp.
Bill was born on March 11, 1932 in Jamaica Plains, NY. Bill & Kathy’s love story was one for the ages. They went steady as teens in Stockton, lost touch, but destiny had them reunite and marry 44 years later. BIll served as a medic in the Navy attaining the rank of Lieutenant while serving on the USS John A. Bole destroyer. Bill was known for a wonderfully dry sense of humor, and in all ways was an officer and a gentleman.
A memorial service with military honors is scheduled for June 6, 2015 at 2PM at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, 1823 9th St. in Berkeley.
