William B. Alexander Jr., age 88, of Castro Valley, California, passed away on April 21, 2026.
Born on August 29, 1937, in Mineola, New York, William lived a long and full life marked by dedication, kindness, and quiet strength. William moved across the country to California with his family in 1943. He grew up in Berkeley California, entered the United States Navy at age 19. At age 20 William met Laurel and later married the love of his life in Richmond CA. He then studied at Contra Costa College, later William would earn his masters in design and architecture from Cal Berkeley. William and his loving wife Laurel moved to Castro Valley in 1969, where he became a familiar and respected member of the community. William taught drafting courses at Chabot Junior College during the early 70’s.
William had a deep passion for architecture, a calling that shaped both his career and his legacy. As a joint owner of Mullin Morris Alexander Architects, he remained active and engaged in his work for more than 60 years. His commitment to his craft and his enduring work ethic left a lasting impact on both his profession and those who worked alongside him.
He was known for his integrity, steady presence, and devotion to the people in his life. William found great joy in family time and church life as a member of the Castro Valley United Methodist Church for over 56 years. William truly enjoyed creating meaningful memories with those he loved. He valued family above all else and was a constant source of support, wisdom, and encouragement. William moved to Ivy Park Senior living facility along with his wife Laurel in 2023. This is the same facility he designed as an architect with his partners in 1987. Residents often enjoyed complimenting William on this great design that serves 100’s of elderly residents today. William was often seen drawing, painting, and conversing in the art room there at Ivy Park.
William found deep joy in life’s simple pleasures and the meaningful connections they inspired. He took great pride in running model trains at the San Leandro Historical Railroad Society, which was beautifully restored through his own design in1988. He devoted over two decades to leading and sponsoring Boy Scout Troop 701 in Castro Valley. Through his service on the Board of Review, he helped guide and approve more than 100 young men on their path to becoming Eagle Scouts, an honor he himself held with pride. William also treasured time spent in Santa Cruz, the Hawaiian Islands, and at his cabin along the Russian River with his family and close friends. Those who knew him best will remember his wisdom, his unwavering integrity, and the steadfast dedication he brought to every endeavor.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Laurel M. Alexander; his son, William B. Alexander III; his daughters, Elizabeth Hirsch and Ellana Manfredi; and their spouses, Rebecca Alexander, Thomas Hirsch, and David Manfredi. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Randall Tapp, Kenny Alexander, Liesel Hirsch, and Rebecca Hirsch, and his great-granddaughter, Faith Lauren Tapp. William is further survived by his brother, Dennis Alexander; his sister, Winifred Camp; as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will continue to honor his memory.
A memorial to celebrate William’s life will be held at Castro Valley United Methodist Church on May 7th at 6:00 p.m., followed by a chapel service on May 8th at 1:00 p.m. at Sunset View Cemetery in El Cerrito, California.
William will be deeply missed by his family and friends and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
