OBITUARY
Vir Singh Chahal 91, died peacefully Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at the Vale Healthcare Center in San Pablo following a brief illness.
He leaves behind his wife, Kulwant Kaur (married for 75 years); daughter Rajwant Kaur; sons Gurmit, Karnail and Jarnail; 11 grandchildren; 24 great- grandchildren; and many close family & friends.
Born and raised in Khanpur, Distt. Amritsar in Punjab, India, the son of Desa Singh and Inder Kaur. He moved to the US in 1988 to join his youngest son Jarnail and his family.
In his early years, he graduated First Division from JDJ High School, Dhilwan, Punjab. He got married quite early in 1944-46. To support his growing family, he started working soon after graduating. Being an exceptional student, he became a Teacher. He liked helping the community with reading, writing letters and teaching students from poor families. He later advocated for the 1st Post office for his village and to upgrade his elementary school to middle and then high school. For many years, he did post office work as his second job in the evenings. Due to his helping nature in the community & hard work, he was promoted to District Supervisor where he worked until his retirement before he moved to the US.
He was a great family man and caretaker. He always brought his grandkids together in summer vacation to his village. After moving to the US, he acquired US Citizenship and petitioned for his other kids and grandkids who then joined him in 1997. He loved seeing his family together and always stayed in eternal high spirits throughout his life’s journey.
His family will miss him dearly.
