Tze‐John Liu, a gentle and devoted man of faith, passed away on February 7, 2026, at
Highland Hospital in Oakland, California, at the age of 73. He was born on June 7, 1952, in
Yilan, Taiwan, and in recent years had lived for several years at West Lake Christian Terrace
senior home in Oakland before moving to Bay View Nursing Center in January of this year.
Tze‐John spent his childhood in Gangshan, Kaohsiung, Taiwan, where he grew up in a simple,
provincial environment that shaped his humble and grounded character. Gifted with a keen
mind and a deep love of learning, he attended one of Taiwan’s top boys’ high schools, National
Tainan First Senior High School. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from
National Tsing Hua University, one of Taiwan’s leading universities, and later immigrated to the
United States to pursue a master’s degree in chemistry at Syracuse University.
An intellectual and a scholar, Tze‐John was known within his family as a lover of knowledge
and a thoughtful storyteller. He possessed a vast understanding of history, nature, and science,
and delighted in sharing interesting facts and stories with his loved ones. In this way, he took
after his father, passing along curiosity and wonder through quiet conversation and gentle
teaching.
Central to Tze‐John’s life was his faith. Having dedicated his life to Jesus, he lived his beliefs
with simplicity and sincerity. He was a longtime member of Newman Hall–Holy Spirit Parish in
Berkeley, California. Through an international podcast of scripture readings, he shared the
Word of God across borders and languages, seeking to spread comfort, hope, and faith to
listeners around the world. His life was marked not by material pursuits, but by a singular
devotion to Christ and a quiet, steady witness to the Gospel.
Tze‐John is survived by his siblings, in birth order: eldest sister Chia‐Chia Liu, second sister
Chia‐Ching Liu, third sister Ruoh-June Liu, and younger brother Tze‐Hwa Liu. He was
preceded in death by his mother, Tzen Chao‐Wei Liu, and his father, Tze‐Shen Liu.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, between 10:00 AM and 2:00
PM at Sunset View Cemetery and Mortuary in El Cerrito, California (101 Colusa Ave, El Cerrito,
CA 94530, USA). In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Tze‐John’s
memory to Newman Hall–Holy Spirit Parish in Berkeley, California, which was his spiritual
home and a community he dearly loved. This simple act of generosity and support for the
Church he cherished is a fitting way to honor his life of faith.
