Resident of Richmond
Tom Mullarkey went missing while skiing at Bear Valley Ski Resort on March 14. He was found two months later on May 14 by a very dedicated group of search and rescue workers. He was 65 years old.
Tom was born in Oakland and grew up in Albany attending Cornell School, School of the Madeleine and St. Mary’s College High School in Berkeley. He served as an altar boy at St. Ambrose Church, played Albany Little League and helped coach CYO basketball with his Uncle Frank Correia.
After high school, Tom became an apprentice electrician with IBEW Local 595. Soon after graduating as a journeyman electrician in 1977, he moved to Utah for the winter to fulfill his dream of skiing every day. He returned to the Bay Area and began his lifetime career as a proud union electrician for 45 years, serving his Local as a Business Representative for the last seven years. He retired in 2013. Throughout his career Tom volunteered for causes and candidates in support of the goal of fair living wages for all. This included work on the Alameda Labor Council and the IBEW 595 Health and Welfare Board.
Tom’s volunteerism and love of community extended to his alma maters, his beloved St. David Church, his childrens’ schools, sports teams, and Boy Scout Troop and his union. He played co- ed volleyball for many years, and continued to play co-ed softball until the time of his death. Besides skiing, Tom loved outdoor activities, especially camping and hiking. He made lifelong friends all along the way.
Tom was especially close to his large family, born number four out of nine. He enjoyed attending the events of his nieces, nephews and grandchildren. He loved big, loud family gatherings.
Tom was predeceased by his parents, John and Agnes Mullarkey, his sister, Theresa Mullarkey Rodriguez, and most recently his daughter, Catherine Mullarkey Myers. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Jane Drummond-Mullarkey and his children, Elizabeth Pilara and Matthew Mullarkey. He leaves behind four adoring grandchildren, Juliana, Nico, Lilia, and Luca Pilara as well as two sons-in-law, Ricky Pilara and Quincy Myers. Tom is also survived by seven siblings, Jim, Pat, Rosie, Joanne, Bob, Cathy and Elaine and their spouses as well as his Godfather, Frank Correia, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the Alpine County Sheriff Office, Bear Valley Resort, the many Search and Rescue teams, IBEW 595 members, and friends for their tireless efforts pertaining to Tom’s recovery.
