Shelby, also fondly known as ‘June’, was born in San Francisco, California to her parents, Sherman L Boles and Clara Rebecca Small Boles and made their way to San Diego where they took up residence in Ocean Beach.
June spent her formative years in San Diego in the Point Loma area and attended San Diego State University with a major in Spanish. It was during World War ll while working as a ‘Wave’ at the North Island Naval Base that she met Second Lieutenant Robert John Wall in the United States Navy. They were married in La Jolla California on July 20, 1947.
Robert, ‘Bob’, a chemical engineer from UC Berkeley joined the Shell Oil Company to work at their Martinez, CA facility. Bob and June moved to Concord where they were members of Contra Costa Country Club. While residing in California they had two children: Kirk, born in 1949 and Eric, born in 1951. June treasured their summers in the Sierras at their Kyburz cabin which Bob constructed after the war on the Silver Fork of the American River.
A corporate family, they were transferred to the East Coast and lived in Rowayton, Connecticut where they enjoyed sailing on Long Island Sound. Then onto Edwardsville, Illinois for six year where the family took up golf. In 1963 the family was transferred to Anacortes, Washington, where the family cruised the San Juan Islands and Mom became a fine ‘first mate’.
The Wall family returned to the Bay Area in 1965 where they took up residence in Diablo and were members of Diablo Country Club. Unfortunately, Bob passed away in 1976 leaving June on her own. Kirk moved up from San Diego to be with her and it was then as a fiercely independent woman that she started the Diablo Foundation, became actively involved in ‘Save Mt. Diablo’, held fund raising events for Guide Dogs for the Blind John Muir Hospital, and the California Symphony at Diablo Country Club. June also chaired the Diablo Cotillion, a yearly debutante ball. Amongst all of these endeavors she remained an avid golfer but bridge was her passion and she hosted a monthly group at the Club with Sandy Hoffman. Mom was dearly loved by many members, especially her dearest friend Maryam Mehran of Diablo and the Club staff.
Mom is survived by her son Kirk Wall, a Building Contractor of Orinda, and Eric Wall, a retired Oral Surgeon who resides in Stockton with his wife Leslie Matsuo Wall. June adored her 2 grandchildren, Brandon and Lindsey. Brandon and his wife Ada of Oakland are blessed with 2 children Cameron and Dakota. Lindsey was married on August 22, 2015 to David Shirley.
June will join her beloved husband Bob at Sunset View Cemetery on Tuesday, September 1 at 11 AM. Friends are welcome to join family members at the gravesite but there will be no formal memorial other than from those who may wish to share….
Donations may be made in her name to John Muir Hospital.
