Setsuko Okazaki was born on September 29, 1936 in Shinkyou, the capital of Manchuria, China at the time, to her father and mother, Shuuzo and Nao Toriuchi. She spent the early part of her life in Manchuria where her father worked as an engineer for Japan Manchuria Railroad Co. Shortly after the end of World War II, her family moved back to Japan, eventually settling in Tokyo. Setsuko spent the remainder of her youth there until she met the love of her life, Toshio, whom she would eventually marry in the United States on October 12, 1963. They were married for almost 50 years until Toshio passed away in 2012. They had one child, Yutaka.
Setsuko was a devoted wife and loving mother. She was by her husband’s side as he worked very hard to establish his accounting practice in San Francisco’s Japan Town and build a better life for his family. She also played an important role in the success of Godzila Sushi after Toshio rescued it from financial trouble and turned it into a thriving business. Setsuko placed the well-being of her family and friends over all else. She treated everyone whom she met with great kindness and respect. Her thoughtfulness, compassion and generosity to others touched many people and made her a loved and respected member of the community.
Setsuko’s greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed performing in the Japanese chorus group with her husband. She also took great interest in politics and current events. Her passion for the local Bay Area sports teams (Giants, Warriors and 49ers) was unmatched by those half her age.
Setsuko is survived by her son Yutaka (James), her sister Michiko, her brothers Kennosuke and Daijiro, and other relatives living in Japan. She will be deeply missed.
