Philip M. Mashy, also known as “Lynx,” died peacefully on January 16, 2026 in Sonoma, California. Phil was born on January 8, 1955 in Reno, Nevada to loving parents, Ted and Dorothy Mashy. He grew up in the Bay Area and settled in Sonoma.
In his youth Phil was influenced by the “hippie” counterculture of the time and embraced it with gusto. He gravitated toward like-minded souls that shared his laid-back style, values and taste in music and art. Many of them became lifelong friends.
Quiet, pensive and soft-spoken, Phil always seemed to have a book in hand or was writing and drawing. He expressed himself through art, an interest he shared with his companion Elaine, herself an accomplished artist and vocalist. He enjoyed curating her rich collection of original art. Their years-long friendship brought him comfort and peace.
Phil worked variously as an ironworker and surveyor’s assistant. With extraordinary mechanical aptitude and attention to detail, he worked with persistence and determination.
Although reserved and introspective, Phil nurtured his friendships with genuine care. May his warm kindness continue to inspire.
Phil is survived by siblings and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Glen A. Mashy, and the love of his life, Elaine Sterler.
Please join us for a burial service at 11:00 AM on Thursday March 19, 2026 at Sunset View Cemetery, 101 Colusa Avenue, El Cerrito, California. A reception will follow immediately after.
