Michael was the kindest, most generous and giving person I ever knew. He taught English as a Second Language in the Berkeley Adult School. His classes were always large and his students loved him. He was very creative, practiced Tai Chi for thirty years, and was interested in all that life had to offer.
Michael was born in Hawaii. His father was in the US Navy, so he travelled much as a child, including Morocco, Florida, MIssouri, Hawaii, Alaska, and California. His parents always found a Catholic school for him, wherever they were stationed. In 1968 he started attendance at the University of California at Berkeley, where he received a Master’s degree in English.
My fondest memories of my dear brother are of us catching lightning bugs in Kansas City, playing in the jungle in Florida and in the jungle in Hawaii, riding our bicycles in Berkeley, hiking in Tilden Park, having coffee at Peets, and generally having fun in all the different places we lived. We lived together for 40 years, mainly in Berkeley. I was his caregiver for the last five or ten years. I enjoyed caring for him. I wish I could have done it longer.
One of his favorite sayings was “Don’t worry, be happy.”
