Marian passed peacefully away after living to be 104 years of age. A long-time resident of the East Bay, she graduated from Fremont High School, Oakland, in 1926. While attending Armstrong Business College, she was employed by Sunset View Cemetery for what was to be a temporary period, but ended up retiring 44 years later as Secretary-Treasurer. She purchased her home in El Cerrito, where she resided for 63 years. An independent and strong spirit, Marian enjoyed travelling, and ventured around the globe on a world cruise in 1972. Marian played a huge role in raising her little brother, who was born when she was 19. An avid gardener and cook, she enjoyed attending ballets and operas, and listening to classical music; she was also an accomplished pianist. Marian loved spending time with her family, and spoiling her five nieces and nephews, and six great-nieces and –nephews, who know her as “Grand-Auntie”. Marian lived a full life, and was known for her lively stories and uplifting demeanor. She has taught everyone around her that love of friends and family is key to a long, happy life. Marian is survived by her younger brother, Bill Emes, wife Rose, and their children’s families: Will Emes, wife Sharon, and son Matthew; John Emes and wife Linda Pasqual; Margaret Shepherd and husband David Donica; Carolyn Emes Jacobs, husband Bren, and children Kristen and Kyle Langford; and great-nieces Angela Hartman and husband Sean, Madeline Schlegel, and Edelle Schlegel. She was preceded in death by her niece, Ellen Emes, in 2004. Private graveside services were held Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at Sunset View Cemetery, El Cerrito.
