I was thinking of Lew as I finally disposed of some old files from when I was a chemist for Unocal (1981 - 1995.) Googling led me here. Although we worked for competing companies, Lew became one of my mentors not long after I began working at Unocal fresh out of college. His guidance and support helped me to grow, eventually leading me to chair one of the Subcommittee A (gasoline) sections in ASTM. (The only reason I was asked was because Lew couldn't serve as chairman for both sections.) Lew was an incredible source of knowledge and always generous in sharing that knowledge. I think I mailed Lew a card a few years ago to tell him how much I appreciated his help through the years. I hope he got it--I had to Google his address, as we hadn't emailed after he left Chevron. To his family, I extend my deepest condolences on the loss of Lew Gibbs. He was a legend in the fuels industry.
