Lawrence Walker Jr., affectionately known as Pop, Redd, and Junior to all who loved him, was born May 9, 1927, in rural Minden, Louisiana, to the proud parents of Lawrence Walker and Minnie Love. Lawrence was the fifth child of seven siblings; Vanous, Edward, Esserlene, Eliza, Emogene, and LaVerne. In Lawrence’ early years, Lawrence and his siblings developed their unmistakable Louisiana brand of Southern charm. The Walker family moved to California in the early 1940s, where in 1948, he would marry his beloved wife Juliette and build their cornerstone of the Walker Legacy.
Lawrence was a industrious man who gave his children an incredible work ethic and drive. It’s often said Lawrence could build and repair anything, and made sure his girls knew how to work on their cars. He retired from the Alameda Naval Airbase after 30+ years of service as an Air Craft Mechanic before picking up his favorite hobby of buying, repairing, and selling cars. Many of his grandchildren got their first “Old-School” from Pop’s driveway. A legendary Raider fan and season ticket holder, he started of family tradition that has all but made the Walker Clan synonymous with the Raider Nation. Combined with his love for Jazz and Blues, time spent with Lawrence was bound to create stories worth re-teling. Above all else, Lawrence Walker’s true calling in life was to be the anchor for his beloved family and friends. His charismatic charm and gregarious personality endeared him to his family on all sides forged friendships that spanned more than half a century. For many he was the favorite Uncle Junior, to his grandchildren he was the legendary Pop, and to his friends, the inimitable Redd had more outlandish stories than can be recounted. He was loved by the family he tied together from Oakland to Atlanta, from Tennessee to Florida, Louisiana, Texas Arkansas and Mississippi. He was a living library of our family history and a true keeper of its legacy.
Lawrence is preceded in death by his wife, Juliette Walker, children Dwaine Williams and Benida Walker-Kelley, parents Lawrence and Minnie Walker; brothers Vanous and Edward Walker; sisters Emogene Walker and LaVerne Easter;.
