Larry Hughes, 91, passed away at home on July 21, 2026 in Pinole, California. Born on June 21, 1935, in Wardner, Idaho, Larry graduated from Albany High School and S.F. State University. He received a M.A. in Education Administration from U.C. Berkeley and was a U.S. Navy veteran. Larry served in the Albany Unified School District for over 40 years as a teacher, principal and interim Assistant Superintendent. In retirement he was the school facilities consultant for the district.
Larry was a devoted husband and loving father. His conscientious and genuine caring for family, friends and colleagues was the driving force that guided his life. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Claudine, his son Philip (Nancy), and daughters Alison and Lisa (Richard); grandson Joseph (Marilyn), granddaughters Sena (Graeme), Cara (Conner), Jordan, Sarah and Samantha; great-grandchildren: Josiah, Hadassah, Bellah, Ellison and Maya; sister-in-law Georgeann Hughes of Colorado Springs, CO, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Larry was preceded in death by his brother Richard, brothers-in-law Gary Lukens and Floyd Harding, and son-in-law Brian Arnold.
Larry was a member of the Association of California School Administrators and California Council for Adult Education. He served on numerous special assignments and committees for the AUSD, ACSA, California Department of Education and Western Association of Schools and Colleges. For over 60 years Larry was an active member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Richmond. Larry especially enjoyed being with his family, good music, golf, photography, travel and leading small group Bible studies.
All those who knew Larry are invited to a memorial service on Saturday, September 19, 2026 starting at 1 PM at First Presbyterian Church of Richmond, 3415 Barrett Ave, Richmond, CA. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Deacons of First Presbyterian Church of Richmond, and/or take your family out to dinner and enjoy their company.
