I continue to be shocked by Dr. Litwin's death. He was a wonderful and warm person. He was kind, personable and fun.! He had a light side that made visits special. I will always miss him when it is time to go to the opthomologist. I totally share your grief. Elizabeth Cole

Patrice Chamberlain left a message on May 22, 2021:
I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Litwin's passing. It feels weird to write something somber because it seems so contradictory to his character. At every eye appointment I could count on a lively discussion about running, traveling, some new ideas/technology he was thinking about to make the office great, or some completely random interesting topic. He was so energetic and witty. He even was very fascinated by my eye infection, which, yes, was gross, but also was just one more indication of how passionate he seemed about the work. I am so sorry to his family and friends left behind and hope that you take comfort in memories with this energetic soul.
Nancy Young left a message on May 19, 2021:
It is still heartbreaking and difficult for us to believe that Dr. Josh Litwin, one of the kindest, most caring, trustworthy, and compassionate doctors we have ever known passed away suddenly. No words can express our profound gratitude to Dr. Litwin for all those years of his excellent professional care - especially with my 89 year old mother who has been dealing with severe multiple eye issues. He was always very gentle, kind, thoughtful, and patient with my mother, and he was very professional and yet personable. My deepest sympathy and most sincere condolences to his beloved parents and children. May Dr. Litwin rest in peace. He will always be missed and remembered.

I was heart broken to find the news of Dr Josh's passing. We met years ago in WA and had many enjoyable visits. I pulled his card out today to call him for advice on an eye problem and shocked to see this online. The heavens have another angel. We will miss you Josh

Barbara Towner left a message on May 11, 2021:
Heart breaking! I just arrived at the office door, six months after last seeing him, and saw the notice on the door. He died 10 days after my appointment, and I was greatly looking forward to seeing him again, as much as I had enjoyed the years of seeing his father as friend, colleague and clinician. I missed the letter and am shocked and saddened and cannot imagine the sorrow your family must be experiencing. Sending love and condolences and gratitude for all the years. Barbara Towner.

I just got a letter from Dr Richard Litwin and was in shock to read about Josh’s death. He helped me so much with the complicated vision diagnosis I had. Loved our visits because Josh would treat me and it sounds like all his patients with humor, kindness and knowledge. You will be missed.

What kind, articulate, loving caring person who put me at ease in his office telling me he was there for me for whatever I needed. He opened the office special for my wife during the Christmas holidays one year when she was in pain. He was so smart and wonderful. Our family will miss him very much. Our heartfelt condolences to his family. His dad is wonderful too!
Carol Granison left a message on February 26, 2021:
This is such a shock as it surely was for everyone!! I saw Dr. Litwin on November 10 for my semi-annual exam. Somehow we got into a discussion of my reluctance to take Prevastatin and he told me to look into COQ10 (which has actually worked out well for me). I had a tall walking stick with me and he said he'd like to get something like that for his father (Dr. Richard who had also been my doctor at one point). We both laughed when I said not to use the C-word (for cane). My heartfelt condolences go out to the Litwin family. This is such a great loss.

I was so sorry to hear about Dr. Litwin's passing. He was truly a great doctor and a great person to be around. I'd been struggling with chronic eye issues for almost a decade before coming to Dr. Litwin, and he was the first one to find a treatment plan that worked. I am forever grateful to him, and he will be missed.
Keith Hyman left a message on February 23, 2021:
My sincere condolences to all of Dr. Litwin's family. I was unaware of his passing until today and, like many others, I'm stunned an saddened. My visits to the family practice were always given graceful and respectful attention and my worries/concerns assuaged. My last visit was on November 13 last year. In reading of Joshua's life, I learned that he'd been a guitarist and had played in a punk rock band, two of my enthusiasms. I wished we'd had the opportunity to have talked on those subjects - and to have continued our annual visits.
Vernon Theiss left a message on February 23, 2021:
Well in shock: I just got this letter in the mail today!!! I have been a patient of Dr. Richard Litwin since 1994 and occasionally and most recently consulted with Dr. Joshua Litwin. Both doctors are/were the perfect examples of terrific, caring and compassionate care. I know Dr. Richard Litwin was working towards "retirement," and now we've lost his son that was taking over our care. My deepest condolences to the entire family and the Berkeley Ophthalmology Medical Group on this loss. I am very sad....Remember now that they are like clouds in the sky..sometimes visible and invisible.... shalom

I just received a note today regarding the passing of Dr. Joshua Litwin and I am so saddened to hear this news! After moving to Berkeley 4 years ago, I was delighted to find an eye doctor that cared deeply about his profession and made me feel comfortable regarding the precautionary measures of keeping my eyesight healthy. I was always a young patient of Dr. Litwin's and I appreciated his humor and diligence to ensure I was monitoring the health of my eyes. I will miss visiting him for my yearly exam and send all of his family and friends my condolences. I am so sorry for your loss.

Nancy Blake left a message on February 17, 2021:
I had no idea until today that Dr. Joshua Litwin had died suddenly last November. He did cataract surgeries on both of my eyes a few years back and from my limited contact with him, I could tell he was every bit as talented and compassionate as his father. I looked forward to my visits with him because it was more like hanging out with a friend than a doctor’s appointment. I’m so very sorry that he is no longer with us and my heart goes out to his entire circle of family and friends. He will be missed.

Dear Litwin Family: I've been a patient of Dr. Litwin, father and son for decades. Last week I left a message about my PD #, and did not receive an call back which is highly unusual. Therefore, tonight February 11, 2021 while on my laptop, thought I would send an email only to find the horribly, sad news that Dr. Joshua Litwin passed away unexpectedly last November. I am so sad, teary eyed as I write this. Last Friday, we lost my 96 year old mother in law, and now this news. Please accept my condolences. I remember how lovely each visit to my optometrist was. Dr. Richard Litwin, senior who had many folks in the office who had been there for decades, at the Milvia office. Then Dr. Joshua Litwin, was equally as kind. I remember speaking with him at my last appointment coming in to view an area of interest that usually requires a second look. I remember we were laughing, talking and enjoyed his patient doctor interaction as much as I had with his dad's practice. I am so sad to know that he has transitioned unexpectedly. Please know he was loved by this patient and my husband who was also his patient. Please know he will be missed. RIP. RI Power. Love, Peace and Blessings, Cheryl Davila Former Councilmember City of Berkeley District 2

I just found out of Dr Litwin passing away. I am stunned, and so very sad. I was a patient of his. He was such a kind, compassionate doctor who really listened to my concerns, and always tried his best to make me feel better about my eyes. He had a great sense of humor too, and very down to earth, which helped to put patients at ease. He was always honest about what could be done and what could not be done to improve the condition of my eyes. Even when I would lose hope, he would be positive and encouraging. What a loss. My most sincere condolences to his family.

I'm so sorry to hear the sad new. I, myself, am a patient of Dr Litwin since 2019. He was the only doctor that gave me relief for my eyes after countless visits with others. . . I will miss his sense of humor, selflessness, smile, story telling about his life in the office, thorough examinations and patience. He would always be all ears and willing to answer questions. I never saw him in a bad mood during my visits or willing to rush a patient out. He was always upbeat. I will truly miss his work as a doctor and spirit as a human-being. My heart goes out to the family and staff. I am deeply saddened. His passing really touched me. I still can't believe it. Feels like I lost an old friend of mine. You are missed and loved by many, Dr. LItwin. May your spirit rest in peace.

I have only been a patient of Dr. Litwin’s for the last four years, mostly for routine eye exams, but in November for cataract surgery. He was such a lively, caring man and I always looked forward to seeing him again. As it turns out, I last saw him the day before he died for a post-cataract exam. He ended the exam in his usual happy and joyful way saying “I’ll see you in February!” And we both agreed we would look forward to it. My deepest condolences to his family and friends who have lost an extraordinary light in their lives. I hope your wonderful memories will bring you comfort.

Dr. Litwin was the most caring, compassionate, and kind doctor I have ever encountered. During one visit I overheard an elderly female patient tell Dr. Litwin about her husband's eye condition. Dr. Litwin went to the waiting room and quietly urged her husband to make an appointment to see him as well. What was extraordinary was that Dr. Litwin quietly told the elderly man not to let a lack of insurance deter him from making an appointment. Dr. Litwin said it was urgent enough where he would do it without any fee. That speaks volumes of the man he was. I hope this isn't too personal, but during our brief chats about life, Dr. Litwin would occasionally bring up his girlfriend. He seemed really happy and proud to be with her. I would like to send her my condolences as well. You will be greatly missed, Dr. Litwin.

I am shocked and saddened to hear of the death of Dr Joshua Litwin, He was THE BEST ophthalmologist I ever had - both from his medical skills and his remarkably warm and personal engagement with his patients - and, I am sure, with his staff. It was worth it to drive from my new home in Sebastopol to any appointment. He stood by me through my recent cataract surgery and helped me deal with attendant anxiety. The world is a poorer and sadder place without him.

The best doctor. You’ve worked so hard with me and my eyesight, always taking your time. I came to you at 17, scared, and having multiple sclerosis. You always kept a close watch on me and concern. You would never let me leave the office until you found a solution to the problem and because of you triple checking and redoing an OCT test you stopped me from losing my eyesight. Truly you have changed my life and I hope to repay you one day. I am left in tears writing this. You were a blessing in my life. Thank you do everything. May you Rest In Peace.

Having enjoyed Dr. Josh Litwin as a colleague for 12 years and having had the true pleasure and honor of being his fellowship director in 2012, I was so very disappointed and saddened to learn of his recent passing. Dr. Litwin was already among the most accomplished cosmetic injectors by the time he entered his cosmetic surgery fellowship; not only did I admire Dr. Litwin’s commitment to excellence during his training, his generosity and humility were an example to all around him, near and far. As an affable and exceptionally well-liked fellow, many did not realize how exceedingly academically accomplished Dr. Litwin was. Having now trained 13 fellows in cosmetic surgery, I can say handily that Dr. Litwin’s repartee on the topics of medical minutia was among the most exceptional. Josh will be sorely missed by his friends and colleagues in the cosmetic surgical community. To Thuan, his family, and his friends, I wish you comfort in your grief and offer you my gratitude, most sincere, for supporting Josh and his contributions as colleague and friend.

So sorry to hear about Josh unexpected passing I knew him from our medical spa days and we shared many fun times together. Dr Litwin had this great soft laugh with a laser sharp eye for medical detail you always felt safe with him and cared for. Rest In Peace dear Josh Love Dawn

My sincere condolences for a wonderful doctor. I'm sure he was very busy during his working days, but he always had time for a good conversation and a smile. Will miss him very much. RIP Joshua.

I was shocked and dismayed to hear of Josh Litwin's untimely and tragic passing. I have been a patient of both Dr.s Litwin for over 20 years. Josh was a responsive, knowledgeable and caring physician who always had time for his patients and genuinely cared about who we are not just what was wrong with us. I will miss him and deeply regret his passing and I too will miss his million dollar smile along with his consistent good cheer and uplifting spirit. My condolences to his father as well for whom I have deep respect.

“I was very saddened and in utter shock when I received the call Josh had passed. He was a friend whom lifted me up each time I saw him over many years. Josh was always considerate and compassionate and gave me confidence in myself, he helped me more than he knew. Thank you for your friendship over the years. You will be missed dearly.”

I was patient of Dr. Litwin's for 20 years. I truly will miss him. He was always happy to see me and help me with my cosmetic needs. His work gave me the confidence I needed to succeed in life. Over the time we knew each other we shared. His life had ups and downs like mine. But we both loved our families very much. He would talk about his Son and Dad very lovingly. His love T was always there for him. Going to miss his million dollar smile! Rip Dr Litwin.
