John Maclean Millican, Husband, Father, Grandfather passed away on Monday August, 24th in a car accident in Hayward, California. John who was born in Cleveland, Ohio grew up in Richfield, Ohio and was a graduate of Revere High School and The University of Akron.
John spent a career in technology. While in Ohio, John founded consulting firms Basis and New Concept Technologies. He was ahead of his time and deeply interested in cybersecurity before many even realized it was an issue and in 2004 moved to California to pursue his passion in information security in Silicon Valley while working as Vice President of IT Operations at Hotwire. After serving as the Chief Information Security Officer for Expedia, Inc., he became an outspoken and passionate member of The Office of the CIO, serving as an Executive Director of the CISO Collaborative. He deeply believed that Silicon Valley’s companies needed to take security seriously and served as a leader and mentor of many organizations including ISSA, InfraGrad, SANS, as well as numerous others. John finished his career working tirelessly to teach and mentor students and provide his industry with experience and wisdom through guest lectures and volunteering at charity events to raise money for scholarships.
Throughout his life, John was a character. John was deeply dedicated to his family and enjoyed cooking food, spending time with his friends at a wine group, politics, technology, as well as his dogs. Anyone who has ever met John would remember his lively retelling of stories, often with details that changed with each telling. Possibly John’s greatest passions were Cleveland sports, most notably Ohio State Football and the pain and agony known as the Cleveland Browns. There is still always next year.
John is preceded in death by his beloved mother Barbara and father James. John’s greatest love, joy, and dedication in life were his family and he is survived by his wife Jill, children Julie and Chris, son in-law Michael, his granddaughter, as well as siblings James, Robert, Barbara, and Beth, brother and sister in-laws Mark, Jackie, and Jodie, along with his 19 nieces and nephews. John will truly be missed by his family, friends, and colleagues.
For any interested and able, a Gofundme account has been established in his name to help with expenses for his wife Jill which can be found here: https://gf.me/u/yvs7m3.
John was also passionate about helping guide and aid students of need into a career in technology through The CIO Scholarship Fund. Donations to this fund can be made at https://www.ciofund.org/
Due to unfortunate circumstances globally, details about a memorial service to celebrate the life of John are still forthcoming.
