I deeply regret that I missed Joan's memorial service. She was extremely generous to me over the years, and I look back at every minute we spent together with the greatest fondness.
Yesterday, I passed her house on San Antonio, and it brought back a flood of memories. Back in the summer of 1996, my girlfriend and I stayed with her in Ireland, where she cheered our engagement. She extended such kindness to us as she drove us to Fota Island for a peek at the menagerie. I also remember her kitchen in Ireland and the smell of bread baking.
Life is difficult and challenging, but the time I spent studying and laughing with Joan are among the highlights of my life. They are somehow bright and shiny, even though I knew she was dealing with her own personal losses, sadness, and difficulties. She never let those negatives in her life diminish the joy she inspired in others.
My sincere condolences to the extended Keefe family, who must still mourn her loss these many years later.
