Jean McArthur Hawkins
A 30 year resident of El Sobrante and former long-time resident of Albany, died Thursday, August 25, 2016 in Berkeley. She was 85.
Jean was born in Middletown, CT on May 25, 1931. She attended San Jose State University, received her Bachelors of Economics Degree from Howard University and her Master’s from California State University Sacramento.
Jean worked in child protective services as a social worker for 40 years and retired from Contra Costa County after 30 years of dedicated service. She was always concerned about the welfare of children and was passionate about diversity, equality, and education for all.
She was extremely smart, a voracious reader, loved British mysteries, and the book channel.
Ms. Hawkins loved learning about Black/African American history and empowerment. She was especially thrilled when she encountered people directly from Africa, as she took an interest in where they were from, what languages they spoke, and how their journeys had led them to America.
Jean was born to the late Ernest and Arline (Banks) McArthur in Middletown, CT were she spent her formative years. She is survived by her loving daughter, Roxanne Hawkins, of Los Angeles, CA, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends.
She was predeceased by four brothers, Curtis McArthur, Raymond McArthur, Ernest McArthur and Albert (Mack) McArthur.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Sunset View Mortuary / Cemetery, top of Fairmount Avenue, El Cerrito.
Another memorial service will be held on Friday, September 23, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Cross Street A.M.E. Zion Church, 440 West Street, Middletown, CT 06457.
