Helen Jean Barnett was born on September 9, 1933 in Warren, Arkansas to the union of Jimmie Lee Childs and Gladys Langford. Both preceded her in death.
Helen was raised by her father and her Aunt Beaulah; she was a happy child and loved school. As a young adult Helen’s family relocated to Tucson Arizona. Shortly thereafter, she and her father moved to Los Angeles, California, where she attended Jefferson High School. After she graduated from high school, Helen moved to San Francisco, California. San Francisco would prove to be a great decision for Helen; this is where she met the love of her life Wallace Barnett. The couple dated, fell in love and was married in 1958. Helen had an aptitude for math and decided she wanted to further her education. She began attending San Francisco City College and enrolled in courses which led to her employment at ITT Continental Baking Company – Hostess Bakery. She worked diligently and became a manager. Her co-workers and customers referred to her lovingly as “The Hostess Lady”. Helen would often times give the delicious treats to the neighborhood children, who never forgot her. Her kindness was appreciated and she was loved dearly. Helen worked at Hostess for 25 years before retiring due to health reasons after her retirement in 1987 she bought a beautiful home in Merced, CA. She remained in Merced county until 2017 when she re-located to El Cerrito, CA to be closer to her daughter and grandson.
Helen was an individual who loved life, family and people. She enjoyed family gatherings and was an avid sports fan. She was a faithful Giants and Warriors fan. Her 80th birthday party was celebrated as a true Giants fan. She enjoyed playing Blackjack and was always ready to head to the casino.
She passed away peacefully at home on October 7, 2019. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Wallace, daughter Barbara Hickman and son, Larry Moore.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Jacquelyn Beatrice Wiley, grandchildren – Dave Moore, Derrick Moore , Kayla Moore and Michael Wiley, four great grandchildren, cousins, Katherine Mickels, Willie B. Jones, Cleo Balinton, Frances Brown and Helen Pennison; Brother-in-law, Jack Barnett; Sister-in-Law, Ida Barnett and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and beloved friends.
