Den Nihei passed away suddenly on October 24, 2012. He was predeceased by his brother Ryo (Sumi), and leaves behind his siblings Ken, Jun (Michimi), Tom (Judy), Rick, Fumi, his long-time companion Kim Onoyama and many nieces and nephews. He will be missed by his family and many friends. Private memorial services were held.
