Darrian Yao Lao Chao was born in Oakland, California on February 6th, 1997. He grew up in Richmond, California with his mother and father. During his childhood he enjoyed spending evenings watching the sun setting in the horizon with his mother at the Berkeley Marina. He also helped manage the family business and always made it his priority to help his father. Darrian had a passion for the piano and taught himself to play many songs.

At Pinole Valley High School, he was a part of the marching band and graduated in 2015. He attended Contra Costa College to pursue a degree in Business. Darrian had an affinity for anime and cosplay. Most importantly, Darrian held his family in high regard and was always accountable and dependable.

Darrian’s beliefs were to live with compassion and empathy. The love for his family outweighs the love for himself. When you meet him, you can tell immediately that his selflessness is what made him the most loveable person you have ever met. Darrian was born with a huge, kind and sincere heart that just kept growing throughout his life. Hence his nickname, Panda Thief, for stealing all of our hearts. He was everyone’s son.

Darrian is survived by his father, Jeffery Chao, his mother, Nalitha Phommavong and his sister, Adina Chao among many family.

There are no words that can ease the pain of losing a child. I watched him grow up in the many years at the bank, he would come in with his Dad to do the deposit, just a little guy then coming in by his self, always a smile on his face, such a sweet boy.
