SUNRISE SUNSET

Bernice W. Booker was born December 12, 1924, to Green Wynn and Ellen Hampton
Wynn in Hermitage, Arkansas – Bradley County. She came from a large family of eight
siblings, primarily headed by her mother. Bernice was the seventh child of nine.
In 1938 she completed Fairview Public grade school, and in 1942 she graduated from
Booker T. Washington High School, both located in El Dorado, Arkansas. She also
completed courses in business school and aspired to becoming a nurse.
At the age of 19 Bernice moved to Dallas, Texas and married J. Leon Booker. Through
this marriage were born four children: Lanece Jay, Benece Juanda in Dallas, and J.
Leon Jr. in Tyler, Texas. Then after moving to Los Angeles, California Brenda Jean was
born.
Bernice – also known as “Nona” – settling in California, lived in San Franciso,
Richmond, Hercules and Vallejo. She was blessed to live a very full life of 99 years; four
months shy of being a Centenarian!
Nona, being the matriarch of five generations of the Booker family was the emotional
support who provided a “home” for the family. She leaves behind her children: Lanece
Tharp of Rio Vista, Juanda Booker of Hercules, J. Leon Booker, Jr. & Brenda
"Enomwoyi" Booker of Vallejo. Nona’s grandchildren: Carl Washington (Kim), Anthony
Booker, Michael Booker (Thea), Andre Tharp Jr. (Tomikka), Nhigel Anderson, J. Leon
Booker III (Bridgett), Anisha Ticzon (Ryan), Alanna Rayford, and Abeje Maolud-Sneed.
Her 20 great-grandchildren & 5 great great-grandchildren.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents and eight siblings – Fred, Lula Bea, and
Rufus Tatum, Hannah, Zola, Mae Void, Juanita, and Lottie Wynn. She joins her
departed husband J. Leon Booker, Sr. and great grandson Michael Booker II.
Bernice lived a full and special life, touching the hearts of family and friends. We will
always love and miss her dearly.
