In Loving Memory of Balwinder “Bavi” Kaur Dhaliwal

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Balwinder “Bavi” Kaur Dhaliwal (née Sandhu), who passed away peacefully on July 28, 2026, in Sacramento, California, at the age of 76.
Born on May 14, 1950, in Village Pandori Ran Singh, District Amritsar, Punjab, India, Bavi was the beloved daughter of Avtar Kaur Sandhu and the late Shamir Singh Sandhu. In 1963, she immigrated to Berkeley, California, with her mother and younger siblings to reunite with her father, beginning a new life while remaining deeply rooted in her Punjabi heritage, Sikh faith, and devotion to family.
For more than 20 years, Bavi shared a marriage with Bhupinder S. Dhaliwal, with whom she raised her three beloved children: Navtej, Vikram, and Harkeerat.
Bavi dedicated many years of service to the City of Berkeley, spending most of her career in the Finance Department before a brief tenure in the Fire Department.
She will be remembered for her warm hospitality, jovial and carefree spirit, and her ability to make everyone feel at home. She found joy in cooking for family and friends, enjoying a cup of cha or coffee, working on puzzles, shopping on QVC for the latest kitchen gadgets, FaceTiming her older sister, trying her luck at the occasional family poker party/trips to the casino and dining out. Above all, she treasured the time she spent with her family.
Bavi is lovingly survived by her mother, Avtar Kaur Sandhu; her children, Navtej, Vikram, and Harkeerat; her sisters, Bhupinder K. Mar, Sukhwinder Amberg, and Rajwinder K. Sandhu; her brother, Kuljit S. Sandhu; her beloved granddog, Athena; and many cherished nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Shamir Singh Sandhu and her beloved granddog, Charlie.
Bavi’s jovial and carefree spirit, quiet strength, and unconditional love will forever live on in the hearts and homes of all who knew and loved her.
