Alfred “Al” Perry Rodrigues was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1936, to Frank and Mary Rodrigues, both originally from Portugal. After immigrating to the United States, Frank and Mary settled in Newark’s “Little Portugal” neighborhood, where they began their life together and welcomed their son, Al. The family later moved to El Cerrito, California. Al grew up inspired by his father’s entrepreneurial spirit, investing in property and later operating Nova’s Café, where he learned the values of hard work and community.
Al graduated from El Cerrito High School, where he met the love of his life, Reba. The high school sweethearts married in 1956. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised three sons, Frank (Shari), Stanley, and Curtis (Denise), in Pinole, California, where they were proud longtime residents. Married for 66 years, their love was the heart of a large family and a wide circle of friends and loved ones who were all treated like family.
Al was the proud grandfather of five, Anthony, Amber, Nicole, Jacqueline, and Isabelle, and the great-grandfather of eight, Xochitl, Xitlali, Landon, Layla, Connor, Maverick, Joseph, and Kamryn, who all brought him endless joy. He was a constant presence at his grandchildren’s games and events.
Together, Al and Reba owned and operated Furber Saw, Inc. for more than 20 years. After retiring, Al continued working part-time for another decade.
A man of many passions, Al loved the thrill of the horse races and was a familiar face at Golden Gate Fields. He was an avid sports fan and a loyal supporter of Bay Area teams. He spent many weekends bargain hunting at local flea markets, always certain the deal of the century was just around the corner.
Al and Reba were pillars in their community, known for their generosity, warmth, and the countless gatherings that brought friends and family together. Whether hosting lively parties, traveling together, or enjoying weekly poker nights with friends, they created memories that will be cherished by all. With his calm spirit and witty humor, Al brought laughter to everyone around him.
Above all, Al loved his family and found his greatest joy in simply being together, sharing meals, laughter, and stories that will live on through generations. He will be deeply missed.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Reba, and his parents, Mary and Frank.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Sunset View Cemetery in El Cerrito.
