Rita Driscoll of El Cerrito passed away peacefully in her family home on December 12, 2016 surrounded by her devoted family. She was born in County Kerry (Castleisland), Ireland. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 49 years (Michael) and loving son Timothy. Rita is survived by 8 children: Michael G. Driscoll, Jerry A. Driscoll (Roseanne), Patrick J. O’Driscoll (Sherri), John R. Driscoll (Peggy), Kevin F. O’Driscoll (Anjanette), Mary Beth Medina (Dominic), William A. Driscoll (Kelly), and Colleen R. Gallagher (Michael). She also leaves 15 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, to forever cherish her in their memories.

Rita was well known for her thoughtfulness and her strong devotion to family, faith and friends. She enjoyed hosting large holiday parties, and loved welcoming everyone into her home. As Rita and Mike raised 7 sons and 2 daughters, she will forever be remembered as one of the all-time great Moms! There was nothing she couldn’t accomplish once she set her mind to it. She instilled this belief in her children. Managing her large household, she held numerous talents. Raising her children brought many joys to her. Rita was a great role model and people felt most comfortable seeking her out for advice and guidance. She strongly supported and encouraged her children to get an education and make the world a better place.

Rita was a parishioner at St. David of Wales Catholic Church and a member of the United Irish Cultural Center of San Francisco. She led an exemplary Christian life. One of her last messages to her family was to attend Mass regularly and keep the family bond and traditions alive and strong.

Family and friends are invited to attend visitation on Sunday, December 18 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary beginning at 6:00 p.m. at Sunset View Mortuary, 101 Colusa Ave in El Cerrito. A Mass Of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, 11:00 a.m. at St. Jerome Catholic Church, 308 Carmel Ave, El Cerrito, CA. Committal to follow at Sunset View Cemetery in El Cerrito. A reception will be held immediately following the committal at St. Jerome’s Catholic Church Reception Hall.

Hi Mary Beth and Colleen My name is Mike Burke son of Redmond (Mundy) Burke Ballymacpierce, Tralee County Kerry. I was sorry to hear of your sad news and would like to pass on my sympathy to you and all your other siblings at this difficult time. My wife Catherine and I met and stayed with Rita back in March 1991 and she was very good to us putting us up for a while and feeding us well. I can remember meeting Mary Beth and Colleen and one of your brothers who had a red sports car at the time, a RED ford Mustang I think which he let me drive around the block (Mind you he was very nervous that I would crash into something!!!) My mom Sheila used to write to Rita regularly with all the news from home at a time when there was no emailing or Facebook. I can also remember parcels of clothes coming from various relations around America and I am sure Rita was among those sending them. When these parcels would arrive we would all be wondering was there something nice in there that we would wear and no one else around here would have anything like it!!! There might have been the odd fight or two to determine who got what!! My own mom Sheila died 4 years ago aged 81 and my dad Redmond around 8 years ago at 81 also so I know the feeling of sadness that surrounds you at this difficult time. We still miss them both very much especially around Christmas time when we all got together on Christmas eve to open presents, a very special memory. So you are facing into your first Christmas without Rita which will be tough but remember the good times and you will get through it OK. Best wishes Mike, Catherine and Family
