Terence LeRoy Horner, 84, of Lafayette, CA, passed away on November 29, 2022 at home, surrounded
by his family. Dr. Horner is survived by his wife of 63 years, Christine Tedesco Horner, brother Douglas
R. Horner (Carol), cousins Jeffrey W. Horner (Lucia) and Pamela Service (Robert), as well as children
Michael B. Sumeru Horner (Molly Leena), Julie H. Oksas (Stephen), Dr. Sarah G. Horner (Robert Hoult),
James B. Horner (Elizabeth McBee Horner), and grandchildren E. Grace Ritchie (Brian), Fiona Horner,
Alison Yardley, Christine Oksas, Catherine Oksas, Mackenzie Hoult, Claire Horner, Emma Horner, Evan
Yardley, and Julia Horner-Bell.
Terry was born in 1938 in Berkeley, CA. His father, grandfather and two uncles were dentists. Three of
them practiced together in Berkeley, and the fourth was Dean of the University of California San
Francisco Dental School for 25 years (Willard C. Fleming). Terry attended Berkeley High School, UC
Berkeley, and UCSF School of Medicine, where he completed award-winning research on respiratory
function with classmates Eric Wahrenbrock and Jon Pegg. He completed a rotating internship at the
county hospital in Honolulu (Queen’s Hospital), and residency at UCSF in Anesthesia.
After three years in the Army (Stuttgart, Germany), he spent his 32-year career as a pediatric
anesthesiologist at Children’s Hospital, Oakland, teaching anesthesia residents from UCSF, Stanford and
UC Davis. Terry’s lifelong commitment to medical education culminated in his decision to donate his
remains to the UCSF Willed Body Program. (His wife Chris bid him farewell with instructions to “go on
now, you have more to teach us.”)
Terry was a lifelong musician, building his first “gut-bucket” (single-string bass) at the age of 16 and later
playing with the East Bay Banjo Club and the San Francisco Banjo Band, as well as performing on
multiple cruises with Dick Williams and the Jazz Sea Jammers. He also had a passion for model
railroading and built layouts in all gauges from HO to garden railways.
Memorial Services will be held at Sunset View Cemetery, El Cerrito, CA on Sunday December 11, 2022 at
2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Terry’s memory to UCSF Foundation, PO Box
