Ramona Mae Cass was born in 1929 in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. She had an older brother Donald and a sister Wanda. Her parents were George and Nancy. She grew up on a farm and moved to California at age 11.
Mom was a beautiful woman. She wore her hair long, curled and tied back to show her pretty face. She wore only lipstick and swore by Noxzema her entire life. She loved to sew, and made money by hemming clothes for others. She loved to go out to the USO with her friend Marilyn and dance. She married at 17 to Robert Genesini and had 2 children, George and Cheryl. Sadly, Robert passed away at an early age. She then married her brother in law (the brother of Wanda’s husband) Leonard Liebert and had 2 more children, Sheila and Marc. Leonard passed away from a heart attack at age 36. Mom was now widowed with 4 children and in her early 30’s.
After 10 years she married a third time to Henry Haynes who passed away Dec. 31, 2009 at age 85 from an aneurysm.
Mom had never held a full time job or driven a car. She was very good at stretching a dollar and saving and raised four children on meager Social Security and Veteran’s survivor benefits. She raised her children to be tough and work hard. We had no idea how poor we were until we were grown and realized how well she hid it. She was an excellent cook and housekeeper, and very involved with her family. She encouraged and participated with her children in their pursuits. She would never let you visit without offering you a drink or candy.
Mom loved to walk, she would walk 4 or 5 miles daily up until she broker her hip at age 79. She also loved to garden and had beautiful flowers beds. Her home was one of the prettiest in Richmond.
She loved to go shopping at Grocery Outlet, the Farmers Market, or anywhere with her son Marc. Trips to the bay, local parks, fairs and wonderful meals at restaurants were shared by Mother and Son. One of her favorite sayings up until the end of her life was “come on, let’s GO!”
She loved to look pretty maintaining her Diva status after entering Pinole Senior Village at age 83. Her hair and nails had to be just right, her clothes clean and not wrinkled. She always wore multiple bracelets and necklaces.
