Philip K. Jensen died March 26, 2018 at age 80.
Phil was born in Bangor, Maine, brought up in Hanover, N.H., and lived in Orinda, California, since 1997. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth C. Johnson, sons Andrew and Joshua, and granddaughters Jennifer and Sarah Jensen. Sadly he was predeceased by his eldest son, Robert Leavens Jensen.
Phil was educated at Hanover N.H. High School, Phillips Academy Andover, Princeton University and Stanford Law School. He practiced law in California for 46 years, retiring in 2009. In the last 30 years of his law practice he specialized in the intricacies of California municipal bonds, which he found endlessly fascinating. In his early years, Phil taught real estate law at the University of California Extension and for banks and business organizations, and at one time was a California Deputy Attorney General.
He had diverse interests. He particularly enjoyed picking wild blackberries from his favorite secret spots in the Sacramento Delta. He won over 100 prizes from several county fairs for his green herbs and fruit liqueurs (primarily strawberry and blackberry). He grew quantities of tomatoes (which he pronounced “to-MAH-toes”) along with other vegetables and fruits. For many years sailing with Elizabeth was a warm-weather passion. After retirement he enjoyed world travelling with Elizabeth. And for many years he was the self-described “world champion hearts player”.
Any contributions can be made to Hospice of the East Bay, 3470 Buskirk Ave., Pleasant Hill 94523, where Phil was an admiring volunteer and supporter of its programs.
A memorial service will be held at the Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church, 49 Knox Dr., Lafayette, at 2:00pm on Saturday, April 28, 2018.
