Neva Louise Hitchcock was born July 11, 1931, in Richmond, California, to Mabel Carling and Jesse C. Hitchcock. She lived for 93 years and died in Long Beach, California on December 4th, 2024. She attended school in El Cerrito, Martinez, Concord and graduated from Alhambra High in Martinez in 1949. She received a BA from U. C. Berkeley in 1953, then spent a fifth year earning a general secondary teaching certificate. Her major was Spanish with a minor in Latin and English. Her first teaching job was in Calistoga, where she taught all the subjects. After her parents and sister moved to Long Beach she taught one more year in Inglewood and then spent the rest of her 39 years of teaching at El Segundo High School.
She provided a home for her parents and younger sister, Donna. Neva had many friends and family she loved to visit. She and Donna traveled all over, usually by train. She was fond of themed birthday parties and holiday gathering of friends. She loved giving and getting mail. She kept all correspondence and treasured them all. Neva desired to remain in her home independently, which she did with the support of her neighbors, the Daniel Garcia family and Jesus Vazquez. They were only a phone call away and frequently would just drop in to bring her food and check on her. Her last six months required additional help so Mr. Garcia rallied more support so she had assistance daily. With the help of a former student and friend, Gloria Cortez; her friend and hairstylist, Llana Gerardi; her adopted nephew, Rick Jennings, his wife JoAnn and adopted niece Donna Buzzard and her husband, Terry; Neva was able to remain in her beloved home with her memories surrounding her. She remained fiercely independent and strongly opinionated to the end. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed. She will be buried at Sunset View Cemetery in El Cerrito California next to her sister and near her parents.
