Shih-Ger (Ted) Chang, 76, of El Cerrito, CA, passed away at home surrounded by family on Monday, July 30, 2018.
Shih-Ger (Ted) Chang was born on Oct. 24, 1941 in Taiwan, ROC. After finishing college in Cheng-Kung University, he was awarded a scholarship to pursue further studies in the United States and continued by earning his Master’s degree in Chemistry from University of Detroit in 1968 and his Ph.D degree in Chemistry from University of California, Berkeley in 1972. Shih-Ger then landed a position at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratories where he spent the subsequent 40 years focusing his research in field of air pollution which he was very passionate about. As a dedicated scientist, he worked tirelessly in the laboratory identifying various pollutants and developing techniques to remove them from the environment. Dr. Chang’s achievements include numerous scientific publications and 14 patents directed at improving human health and environmental protection.
He is survived by his wife Yami of 22 years, daughter Stephanie, sons Joseph and Edward, brothers Shih-Jeh and Shih-Zhen, sister Hui-Chen, ex-wife Judy Tsay, grandson Grant and many loving nieces, nephews and extended family. Shih-Ger was a loving father, husband, grandfather and brother. He was preceded in death by his parents, Yu-Ching and Tsu-Yin, and sister Hui-Fen. Ever the responsible and dedicated family man, he always worked to support his family, assisting in every way possible. He was also an avid gardener – he and Yami spent endless hours cultivating their beautiful backyard. Since retirement, Shih-Ger (Ted) has enjoyed traveling the world with his family.
A private service and burial will be held at Sunset View Cemetery and Mortuary on Friday, August 3, 2018. Condolences for the family may be offered online at www.sunsetviewcemetery.com
