Melvin Stanley Hing (“Dad”) was born Apr. 6, 1930 in Sacramento and died Aug. 27, 2013 in Oakland. Son of Albert and Grace Chong Hing, Dad grew up in Sacramento with three siblings. Dad lost his own Father at an early age but his Mother helped ensure he had a happy childhood.
At age 20, Dad enlisted in the Korean War and served as a cryptographer in the U.S. Air Force Security Service with the 15th Radio Squadron Mobile. Later in life Dad became a proud member of the 15th RSM Association of Korean War Veterans. In 1954, Dad was honorably discharged and returned to Sacramento. There he married and helped raise three children. While supporting his family, Dad worked part time and earned a B.A. in Social Sciences and a minor in Business Administration from California State University. After graduating in 1958, Dad began a long, accoladed career with county government. In his twenty years of service for Sacramento County, Dad worked for different Departments including Social Welfare and Public Works. Dad’s time with Sacramento County culminated with him becoming the Acting County Executive. Dad fondly recounted guidance he received from two Sacramento County Executives, who remained Dad’s mentors and friends. Dad’s greatest career achievement was serving as Alameda County Administrator from 1978 until his retirement. Dad retired in 1989 to become a self-proclaimed house-husband to support his wife, Jeanne, and their daughter. During retirement, Dad became a member of the Montclair Elementary School Parent Teacher Association and served as PTA President from 1995-1996. Dad also served on the Board of Directors at Emmett A. Larkin Co., Inc., volunteered with the Head-Royce School athletics program, and joined the Board of Directors for the Purple Silk Music Education Foundation. Last but not least, Dad was an avid and perhaps an eternal Oakland A’s baseball fan.
At 83 years old, Dad continued to learn and to grow, and to teach his family the values he felt were important. When he was growing up, Dad’s parents instilled in him the importance of being honest, loving, and understanding. Dad exemplified these qualities up to his death and memories of his unique character will live in the hearts and memories of his family and friends.
Dad is survived by his loving family and friends. There will be a private memorial service, including military funeral honors. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Purple Silk Music Education Foundation.
