Melvin “Zizi” Schiavon, 91, of Berkeley, CA passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2019. Mel was born to Teresa and Guido Schiavon in Oakland, CA.

In his early years, Mel was a football and track and field athlete. After graduating with honors from Technical High School in Oakland in 1946, he joined the U.S. Army where he served as a Technician Fifth Grade and was decorated with the World War II Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal.

After his service in Japan, he earned a trade certificate as a Structural Steel Fabricator in 1954. He worked for Herrick Corporation in Hayward as an ironworker, fitter and layout man for 40 years, advancing to foreman and superintendent. After retiring in 1988, Mel spent his time gardening, jogging, walking, cycling, fishing, drinking wine (never water!!!) and volunteering at his neighborhood church.

Never having children of his own, his sister’s children and grandchildren, his lifelong friends and the communities of Saint Ambrose Catholic Church and his neighborhood (where he was dubbed “The Ambassador”) became his family. Mel was predeceased by his parents, his brother-in-law, Anthony Crescenti and his dearest friend, Jennie Lim Lee. He is survived by his sister, Elsie Crescenti; his niece, Toni Fischer and her husband Charles Fischer; his nephew, David Crescenti; his great niece, Ashley Stern and her husband Michael Stern, his great nephew, Brandon Fischer; and many close friends.

The funeral will be held on Friday, December 6, 2019 at Saint Ambrose Catholic Church, 1145 Gilman St, Berkeley, CA 94706 with the viewing at 11:00 AM, service at 12:00 PM and burial immediately following at Sunset View Cemetery & Mortuary, 101 Colusa Ave, El Cerrito, CA 94530.
