Lawrence Layne Bruton
April 6, 1937- January 21, 2018
Lawrence (Larry) Bruton (80) of El Cerrito passed away quietly at his home on January 21, 2018 from a short vicious battle with Pancreatic Cancer. He was surrounded by family members. Larry was born in San Francisco to Martin and Barbara Bruton. His early schooling began in San Francisco. He later attended Junior and High School in Palm Springs, and finished college at San Jose University, where he belonged to the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. Upon graduation in June 1959, he went to Officer Candidate School in Newport Rhode Island for a career in the Navy both as a Line Officer and later as a Supply Corps Officer. His duty assignments included, the USS Rochester CA-124, the Fleet Communication Station in Kunia Hawaii, Navy Supply Corps School, USS Cabildo LSD-16, Naval Station Atsugi Japan, Naval Supply Center and Transportation Management School, Oakland, Joint U.S. Military Assistance Group, Bangkok Thailand, followed by his last duty assignment with the Material Ocean Terminal Bay Area, Oakland. Larry retired in 1979 as Commander Supply Corps, having served 20 years active duty. He had a very successful post retirement career working for Macy Movers and other transportation companies in the bay area. His most successful move, however was in marrying the beautiful Rena’ Chapman on June 18, 1980. Together they joined the Richmond Country Club where they were a force, both individually and as a couple, to be reckoned with on the golf course, often winning many competitions. He had a zest for life as he and Rena’ traveled to all parts of the globe with close friends, both to golf and to visit popular international cities. What describes Larry most accurately is his inherent ability to engage in conversation with anyone, anywhere, at any time, and how easily he could become your very best friend.
He is survived by his wife , Rena’, of 37 years; by his Sister and brother in law, Stephanie and John Cunningham; by his 3 sons Jeffery, Louis, and David; by his grandchildren Danielle, Kristopher, Ava; and by his niece Laura , and great niece, Isabella.
Urn interment service for family members will be at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery . A Celebration of Life will be held at Richmond Country Club for Friends and Family at a date to be announced.
If desired, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.
