Gina De Sousa

July 5, 1940 - December 26, 2024

Gina De Sousa passed away on December 26th, 2024. She was born in Boston, Massachusetts on July 5th, 1940. She was a member of a large Cape Verdean community.

Gina had a number of friends in the Bay Area, but no relatives. She does have a number of cousins in Boston, including Tony and John Costa.

Gina had a number of careers: Accounting, horticulture, real estate, and social work. She began working as a social worker in the 70’s for county government. She became a licensed clinical social worker in 1981. In 1995, she went into full-time private practice as a psychotherapist.

Gina was a member of the National Association of Social Workers. Gina loved movies, theater, comedy, and live jazz & blues. She also loved spending time with her poodle dog, Taffy. Gina was a resident of Kensington since 1987.

A two day visitation and a funeral will be held at Sunset View Mortuary in El Cerrito. A memorial service will be scheduled at a future date.

My wife Nappy and I met Gina and Alex on the Eurobates, a Greek freighter , while traveling to London. We become friends on board the ship and remained friends when we both settled in London. the four of us spent many times together exploring London. We visited Gina and her then husband in San Francisco ; later we visited her in Kensington and at her wonderful home in Bodega Bay. We loved that Gina was dedicated to helping people and often did so in some of the worst circumstances. We spoke to her often over the years, exchanging political and social comments and cartoons. We loved her and enjoyed our life long friendship...we will miss her.

I met Gina in the early 1970s .She and her then husband Alex were living and working in London. We lived in the same house and spent many evenings and outings together . They were wonderful company. Later on I stayed with them in San Francisco and enjoyed exploring the city with her. On one occasion we noticed a man on a hotel roof , clearly intending to jump off . Gina who was working for the Samaritans at the time went into the hotel and talked the man out of it. It was a wonderful holiday. Gina and I kept in touch and in recent years we spoke on the phone every month. I will miss her very much . Rest in peace Gina , my friend xxc
