Donald Lee Wootton passed away Nov. 18, 2020, age 77, from Alzheimer’s. Born Aug 31, 1943 in Ponca City, OK to Clarence J. Wootton, civil engineer and pilot trainer for the RAF, and wife Gertrude, a registered nurse. They met as pilots in WI. At 6 mo. Don moved to Richmond,CA. where he lived for 73 years. Clarence worked in the Kaiser shipyards surveying the keels as they were laid in Victory ships. Gertrude, her mother Minnie, and baby Don made the car trip to Richmond where Clarence was waiting. Don was the loving brother of Susan Wootton born 4 years later, brother-in-law of Allan Gardiner of Kensington, CA. and devoted uncle of Jake Gardiner of El Cerrito, CA. and Lynn Gardiner of Richmond, CA. Don was a stamp merchant for Lampson’s Stamp Shop in Richmond, CA. then the United Stamp Company in San Francisco until his retirement. He was raised in the El Cerrito Methodist Church and active in the Boy Scouts of America. He achieved their highest rank of Eagle Scout in 1959. He played violin, trumpet, and French horn. He was part of Richmond’s All-City Orchestra. He attended Castro and Balboa elementary schools, Portola Jr. High, El Cerrito High, and Contra Costa College. He played softball and slow pitch for local teams. He belonged to Moose Lodge 550. Don was an avid golfer belonging to Tilden Park Golf Club and Franklin Canyon Golf Club. He received many awards, including 3 holes-in-one and the 1979 and 1996 Spyglass trophies. Don enjoyed many travels on his own, with his family, and with the Wide World of Golf. He is greatly missed.
