Darin Joseph Soward

On Friday, October 1, 2021, Darin Joseph Soward, loving son and brother, passed away at the age of 23.

Darin was born on January 27, 1998 in Walnut Creek, CA to Craig and Terri Soward. He received his Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Ecology and Evolution from the University of California Santa Cruz.

He pursued a start-up career in Pharmaceuticals, had an eagerness to learn, was a technical wizard with computers, and was recently accepted to a master’s degree program in Informatics.

Darin was an intelligent, strong, and determined young man with a promising future and a passion for snowboarding, video games, animals, and movies. He was witty, yet quiet, and deeply cared for his family and friends as well as always there to help someone. Darin was born with a cleft lip and palate that caused him insecurities over the course of his life. He fought many battles and circumvented many obstacles throughout the various phases of his life including close to a dozen invasive surgeries. Unfortunately, another battle took over for which he was not able to overcome. He had such a promising future that was taken away from him at a very young age. Our hearts will forever feel the loss and emptiness of his absence.

He is survived by his Father, Mother, Sister – Deanna, several cousins, three grandparents, several uncles and aunts. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 14^th at the Sunset View Chapel in El Cerrito. Viewing at 9:30am and Service at 11:00am. Unfortunately, due to COVID seating is limited to 50 people. The burial will be at 11:45 which is open to everyone. Join us afterwards for the Celebration of Life at the Berkeley Country Club formerly known as Mira Vista Golf Course.

There are no words for such an unimaginable loss. Our hearts ache for your family. Mark and I were stunned at the news and our hearts have been heavy this past week with thoughts of you and Darin. There have been many moments of just looking at each other with mutual sadness and hugs in support of the family. Darin was a great kid and fun to be around. He's a part of many family memories and will be missed greatly. We love you Teri, Craig and Deann and hope you can find some comfort during this process of grieving. The obituary was well put it describes a beautiful young man which he was. Darin I wish I could have known you more and been there for you more. You and I had a lot in common. Your uncle Ricky will always have you in his heart. My most heartfelt deepest sympathies to your Mom, Dad and sister Deanna.

Darin and I got very close in college. We lived in the same dorm building Freshman year, and our apartments were right next to each other junior year. There was never a dull moment with Darin. Even when we were just hanging out in his apartment, he was always able to crack me up and in general have a good time. He was so caring, and just wanted to be loved by everyone. He was taken too soon, but I’m sure wherever he is he’s making the best of the situation as he always did. RIP, we’ll all miss you

So this candle thing wants a memory. How about when we were over your house and Darin and Cole were throwing rocks on your neighbor's roof! Maybe not too funny at the time, but kinda funny in retrospect.

Hi Sowards. I can't tell you how sad the news makes me. Darin was a great kid, and I was glad he and Cole were buddies. I respected him, and he was always more than welcome at my house. I'm so sorry for your loss, and the pain and anguish you must be feeling. You're all in my prayers.

We have fond memories of teaching Darin during his middle school years at St. Francis of Assisi School. He a joy to have in class, and was such a kind and affable young man.
