Daniel Desmond “Papa” Benjamin passed away peacefully at home in Berkeley, CA on February 11, 2013 at the age of 80.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Agnes Benjamin of Houston, TX and all 10 brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Barbara. “Papa” is lovingly remembered by his children David Benjamin (Maria); Sandra Richmond (Tobin); Carol Hedgspeth (Damon) and 8 grandchildren- Kathryn Benjamin, Danielle Benjamin, Jared Richmond, Samari Benjamin, Channing Richmond, Cameron Hedgspeth, Dylan Hedgspeth, and Berkeley Hedgspeth.
Daniel was born in Houston, TX on January 9, 1933. He graduated from Mother of Mercy High School in Texas, and moved to California to enlist in the United States Air Force. He served his country from 1954 to 1958. After serving in Europe, he returned to California, where he and Barbara were married on December 23, 1958. He began an illustrious career with the United States Postal Service. During his 36 year career, Dan made significant contributions to the Country’s commemorative stamp campaign and was the first African American Commercial Accounts Manager for the USPS’s Western Region. He retired in 1990.
Daniel loved gardening, gospel music, and joke telling. However, his favorite activity was spending time with his family. Each one he touched, but particularly his grandchildren, has special memories of time spent with him. His family was blessed with and will always remember his stalwart support and unending pride.
A celebration of Daniel’s life will be held at Sunset View Mortuary, junction of Fairmount and Colusa Ave.’s in El Cerrito on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 11 A.M. Interment will be private.
