Coby Yee, larger than life, loved and adored by many, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2020. She was 93 years young, and a long time resident of San Pablo, CA. Coby was born in Columbus Ohio, one of six siblings born to father Kim Yee and mother See Lee. From a young age Coby loved dancing and sewing. She pursued her passion and became a well known professional entertainer in the San Francisco Chinatown night club scene. In the 1960’s she became part owner of the Forbidden City Night Club where she and her talented team of dancers entertained thousands. She was a magnificent seamstress, designing and creating all of her own signature outfits and elaborate costumes, some of which have been featured in special exhibits. Coby most recently was honored with the 2020 Legend of the Year Award from the Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas. At 93 years young, she was full of energy, still performing on stage, holding seminars on costume making, and traveling internationally to Shanghai, China and Cuba. When asked what her secret was she replied “Stay interested in learning new things and just keep dancing!” Coby was one of a kind- charming, gracious, generous, talented but humble, an inspiration to her family, friends, and fans all over the world. She will truly be missed.
Coby is survived by her daughter Charmaine (Shari) Yee Roh and son-in-law Robert Matsuura; sister Fawn Yee Leong and brother Jackie Yee; numerous nieces and nephews, a great grand niece and nephew, and her life partner Stephen King. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Sung Chew Roh, husband John Washam, sisters Karen Anne Yee, Jeanie Yee and Junie Yee Chan.
A private family service will be held. To honor Coby, donations can be made in her name to the Clarion Performing Arts Center, an IRS 501(c)(3) non-profit educational and cultural center, www.clarionmusic.com, 2 Waverly Place, San Francisco CA 94108, (415)391-1317 or to a charity of your choice.
