Carl was born to Daisy Reeves Markham and Carl Richard Markham Sr. in Austin Texas. Carl Sr. died when Carl was 2 years of age. His Mom, Daisy married Ed Godwin when Carl was five and had two more children, Marilyn Godwin and Derwood Godwin, all deceased.
The family moved from Austin to Flagstaff and then to Richmond, California. After graduating from High School, Carl joined the Navy. He served from 1951 through 1954 and remained on inactive duty in the U.S. Naval Reserve until 1959. Carl received the National Defense Service Medal, the China Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. Carl was stationed in Hawaii, Korea and Alaska.
On completing his service obligation, Carl moved to San Francisco and began a career selling and restoring antique and collectible furniture.
Carl remained in his next career, renovating and managing residential property until his retirement. During those years he lived in Tiburon and St. Helena California. After returning from three years’ residency in Hong Kong, Carl settled in Sonoma before moving to Green Acres Manor in Kenwood.
Carl loved to travel. He visited almost every continent and most of the worlds’ major cities. He was a talented gardener and cook. He took special delight in growing his own vegetables and preparing meals from recipes sourced from the many places he had visited. He was devoted to his family and friends. His smile was infectious.
Carl is survived by his niece Cynthia Godwin Jacobsen; nephew Daniel Godwin, sister-in-law Bonnie Godwin, cousin Robert Reeves, cousin Georgia Pittman and devoted friend of 44 years, Peter Gordon.
Carl’s cherished friends include: Charles Fisher, Alain Calzadilla, Lee Velde, Healy Leong, Peter Espe, Ken Armstrong, Steve Cram, Charles DuVal, Jay Moore, Rick Hoierman, Harry Sarafian, Richard Taylor, Philip Hager, Michael Gee, June Ambrose, Jerry Evans, John Jurkowski, Richard Calvo, and Terry Dalton.
Carl Richard Markham, Jr. will be remembered for his big smile, big heart, kindness to all and cheerful outlook.
