REMEMBERING
Anne Egli Matthew
Greatly loved and admired, Anne Matthew passed away September 12, 2017, after a life lived well and to the fullest. She was born November 15, 1920, in Winterthur, Switzerland. At age 3, she traveled with her mother and two younger brothers to join her father in Canada. After a short stay in Canada, the Egli Family settled in Kensington on Avon Road. Anne was the oldest of seven; a sister Margaret Carson, also a resident of Rossmoor and five brothers: John, August, Fred, Herb, and Albert.
Anne graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in English and a minor in French. While at Berkeley she met Norman Matthew. They were married in 1944 in New York while Norman was attending the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at King’s Point. Following the war, they settled in San Mateo. They had three children, Ronald, Nancy Hain and Helen Learn. It was a great loss to the family when Ron was taken by ALS in 2014. Daughter-in-law Judith Matthew of Bellevue, Washington and son-in-law William Hain of Alna, Maine feel fortunate to have had such a warm relationship with their mother-in- law. Anne had three grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Anne lost Norman too soon in 1973. She returned to school for two years at age 53 to become a Licensed Vocational Nurse. When Anne moved to Rossmoor in 1985, she developed passionate interests in opera, Shakespeare, and the Oakland and San Francisco Symphonies. Volunteerism was a big part of Anne. She ably volunteered with John Muir Hospital, Kaiser Shadelands, the California Symphony, the San Francisco Opera Guild East Bay Chapter, and Festival Opera in Walnut Creek. When it was time to stop driving, Anne became one of Rossmoor’s best shuttle passengers. She expressed gratitude to all her drivers with her famous signature cookies. She was always curious to learn new things and was a life-long gardener, knitter, avid reader, and a constant and good friend.
Anne often referred to herself as MAG which stood for Mom, Annie, Grammy. Family and friends desribed her as Marvelous, magnificent, motivating, memorable, Awesome, animated, audacious, amazing, affable, ageless, adorable, amusing, adventurous, Glorious, groovy, generous, gregarious, grand, gardener, gutsy, graceful, gracious. We will miss her and smile in remembering our Mom, Annie, Grammy.
