Alice Craig passed away peacefully, surrounded by those who loved her, on Saturday, July 23, 2016. Alice was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on May 6, 1920, the daughter of Robert and Fanny Amelia Irving. Her family later moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. There, while still in high school, she met her future husband, Glenn Howard Craig. Alice and Glenn met through a social group that their fathers participated in as World War I veterans of The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada. Alice and Glenn were married on September 1, 1945, shortly after Glenn returned from his service with the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. Several years later, Alice and Glenn moved to El Cerrito, California. They and their young daughters Nancy and Linda Craig moved to Concord in 1955 and joined the First Presbyterian Church in 1956. Alice was known for her good cheer and her enthusiasm for family activities. Although she much enjoyed being a wife and mother, she also worked for many years in the Mt. Diablo Unified School District as the Administrative Assistant for district’s special education programs. She also enjoyed the many camping and fishing trips that the family took in California and throughout the West. She was active in the Church, loved to garden and care for her cats. Once Alice and Glenn become “empty nesters,” they enjoyed RVing, including many steelhead fishing trips in Northern California.
Alice is survived by her daughters, Nancy Craig and wife Helen McComas of Santa Fe New Mexico, and Linda Garcia and husband Charles of Richmond, California; her granddaughters Jennifer Garcia and husband Nick Johnston of Auckland, New Zealand, and Alice’s great-granddaughter Rebecca Nicole, and granddaughter Sarah Garcia of Richmond, California. Alice was preceded in death by her husband Glenn and her brother James Irving, who died in an airplane crash while he was serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II.
The funeral will be held on Thursday, August 4th at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Concord, followed by interment at the Sunset View Cemetery, where Alice, Glenn and their parents will be reunited.
